Junior Olympic Archery Development or JOAD is administered by USA Archery, the national governing body for the sport of archery. USA Archery is sanctioned by the US Olympic Committee to oversee US Olympic Archery. JOAD activities can range from beginner instruction and outreach to world championship competition. JOAD missions range from character development to international championship competition.
Southwest Bow Benders is passionate about exposing youth to the sport and sportsmanship of archery. We have worked with hundreds of youth, introducing them to the sport of archery, archery hunting, all safety rules on the range and in the field, and the ethics of sportsmanship. Our members donate time and training to keep this program going strong.
Many of the youth are Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, in addition to those who participate through Community Education classes.
What equipment do I need to start?
With the help of many local organizations, Southwest Bow Benders is able to furnish and maintain all of the bows and other equipment for our youth programs and activities. You are also welcome to bring your own equipment.
How often does JOAD meet?
Currently, the JOAD program meets Thursday evenings beginning at 6:30pm and finishing at 8:00.
What if I have never shot a bow before?
Not a problem! Our volunteers are experienced, skilled, dedicated and patient. Many of the youth in our programs are brand new to archery.
JOAD Star Pins are awarded for scoring achievements. JOAD archers can earn Stars Pins for shooting indoors and/or outdoors with recurve and/or compound bows.
Each Star Pin is a different color, and each has a successive number of stars on it to represent the increasing challenge in earning that particular award pin. In order to allow the greatest flexibility in terms of indoors/outdoors, recurve or compound, each pin can be earned in a variety of ways.
JOAD Archers can display their Stars Pins on lanyards designed for their archery specialty. Each lanyard holds all Stars pins as well as the optional 6- Star Gold pin.
In addition to Star Pins, JOAD archers can earn the official "6-Gold" pin when they shoot six 10's in a row - either in a single 6 arrow end, or in two consecutive 3-arrow ends.
